Interview: Bot-AI in Quake Wars

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Pappy-R: Every bot I’ve ever seen gets stuck in some sort of loop, like in QUAKE Wars I’ve seen them spinning on turns in stairs or even stuck doing something repetitious with the Icarus grav pack. What’s going on in the bot’s routine to make that happen?

John Dean: For the ETQW bot, we use an advanced version of the AAS (Area Awareness System) that was used in Doom3 and Quake3 for their AI. This system gives the bot a complete layout of the game world, and works for both players, and vehicles (air, water, and ground). With this system we can pinpoint a goals location in space and path to it with confidence, no matter our means of transport (even if we pop into and out of vehicles on the way). Using this system has allowed for some really advanced and interesting AI behaviors. Like anything in life, there was a few non-game affecting quirks, but those have since been fixed.
